The Ranthan Kharak Trek in Kumaon is an unexplored gem featuring dense forests, high ridges, and open meadows. With panoramic views of Nanda Kot and Panchachuli peaks, this moderate trail is ideal for those seeking solitude and offbeat Himalayan exploration.
The Ranthan Kharak Trek is one of the most scenic and lesser-known trails in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, offering a perfect blend of serenity, culture, and natural beauty. Unlike the popular Garhwal treks, this offbeat route takes you through untouched landscapes filled with lush green meadows (kharaks), dense oak and rhododendron forests, and mesmerizing Himalayan panoramas.
Starting from the quaint village of Gogina, the trail winds through ancient forest paths, peaceful clearings, and picturesque villages, giving trekkers a glimpse of traditional Kumaoni culture. The trek’s highlight is reaching Ranthan Top, where breathtaking views of Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Mrigthuni, Sunanda Devi, and the Panchachuli peaks unfold before you. With colorful wildflowers in spring and golden tones post-monsoon, every season here paints a new masterpiece.
If you’re looking for a trek that’s peaceful, less crowded, and deeply immersive, the Ranthan Kharak Trek is a perfect offbeat adventure in Uttarakhand.
Kharaks (Meadow Clearings): Rest in wide open meadows surrounded by snow-capped mountains — perfect camping spots!
The best time for the Ranthan Kharak Trek is from April to June and September to November.
Avoid the monsoon season (July–August) due to slippery trails and heavy rainfall.
The Ranthan Kharak Trek difficulty level is moderate, suitable for both beginners with good fitness and experienced trekkers seeking solitude.
The trek involves a few steep climbs, especially the ridge walk to Ranthan Top, but the rewarding views of the Himalayas make every effort worth it. With proper guidance and acclimatization, it’s a safe and enjoyable experience for all adventure lovers.
While treks like Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun attract heavy crowds, the Ranthan Kharak Trek remains one of the most offbeat treks in Uttarakhand, hidden in the heart of Kumaon. Its untouched landscapes, lesser-explored trails, and peaceful ambiance make it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and raw Himalayan beauty.
From ridge-top views of Nanda Devi to the unspoiled meadows of Balchan Kharak, every step of this trek brings you closer to nature in its purest form. If you’re searching for a Himalayan journey that combines beauty, peace, and adventure, the Ranthan Kharak Trek with The Mountain Vibes is an experience you shouldn’t miss.

Altitude:
Your Ranthan Kharak Trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathgodam to Gogina village. If you have opted for transportation with The Mountain Vibes, you’ll be picked up from Kathgodam Railway Station. The drive, though long, offers stunning Himalayan views as you pass through Almora and Binsar.
The road from Kangar is particularly picturesque, with stretches lined with tall pine forests. You’ll also pass through Bageshwar — the last major town en route. By evening, you’ll reach Gogina, a quaint mountain village surrounded by serenity and nature. Spend the evening taking peaceful walks through the village lanes and enjoy your stay in a local homestay.
Altitude: 2,150 m / 7,400 ft.
Trek Distance: 5–6 km | Duration: 5–6 hours
Stay: Camping in tents (twin-sharing)
After breakfast, the trek begins with a descent towards the Ramganga River followed by a steep ascent to Namik village. The initial stretch passes through farmlands and forest patches, so follow your trek leader carefully to stay on track.
The descent is steep with loose rocks and mud trails — caution is key. Cross a metal suspension bridge over the Ramganga River before starting a sharp climb to Namik village. The trail offers breathtaking valley views and takes you through oak, maple, and bamboo forests.
Once you reach the Namik campsite near the village temple, enjoy the view of Namik Glacier and the nearby village Keemu. Interact with the friendly locals, soak in the peace of the mountains, and spend the night camping under the stars.
Altitude:
Today’s trail gradually ascends through forests and mountain clearings. The route is lined with oak, maple, and rhododendron trees — in spring, these bloom into a vibrant display of colors.
You’ll cross several beautiful clearings like Raj Gailgadi and Parvar Thor, often dotted with shepherd huts and grazing cattle. Stop by the Pauri Roli stream to refill your water bottles. The area is a paradise for birdwatchers, with chances to spot Flycatchers, Barbets, and Thrushes.
The Bajimanian Kharak (also known as Baji Kharak) is a three-layered meadow surrounded by stunning mountain slopes. In the evening, take a short walk to Balchan Kund, a serene and sacred lake revered by locals. Spend the night camping at Bajimanian Kharak.
Altitude:
Begin with a gentle ascent through dwarf rhododendron forests before walking along scenic ledges and meadows. In spring, the trail is carpeted in pink and red rhododendron blooms.
As you continue, you’ll pass through the Thala Kharak meadow — a beautiful U-shaped depression leading up to Thal Tok. Watch for small Himalayan Pikas and Juniper shrubs along the way.
Thal Tok, your campsite for the day, offers a wide expanse of grassland surrounded by high mountain slopes. Relax, capture the sunset, and unwind under the vast Himalayan sky.
Altitude:
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the Ranthan Kharak Trek. Start early and ascend through rocky, bouldered terrain towards Chopu Top. From here, magnificent views of Nanda Devi, Nandakot, Dang Thyal, Mrigthuni, Maiktoli, and Tharkot unfold before you.
Continue trekking along a ridge to reach Ranthan Top. The climb can be steep and zigzag, especially near the top. During summer, you may encounter snow patches, so tread carefully. Once at Ranthan Top, you’ll witness a panoramic sweep of both the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayan ranges — a view that will stay with you forever.
After soaking in the views, descend back towards Thal Tok and continue to Parava Thor, where you’ll camp for the night. The lower clearing here has a nearby water source — a perfect spot to rest after a long day.
Altitude:
Today you retrace your path back to Gogina, passing through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests one last time. The descent can be steep, so maintain a steady pace.
Take short breaks at Namik village, capturing your final memories of the stunning Himalayan life and landscapes. After crossing the suspension bridge over the Ramganga River, a final ascent brings you back to Gogina village.
Spend your last evening enjoying a warm meal and sharing trek stories with your team before resting for the night in a cozy guesthouse.
Altitude:
Your Ranthan Kharak Trek concludes with a long yet scenic drive back to Kathgodam. Enjoy your morning tea amidst the tranquil mountain views before departing early.
As you travel back through Almora, Binsar, and Bageshwar, reflect on your incredible Himalayan adventure — the trails conquered, peaks witnessed, and friendships formed. Though the trek ends today, the memories of the Ranthan Kharak Trek will stay etched in your heart forever.
