Kedarkantha Trek Overview

The Kedarkantha Trek is one of the most popular winter treks in the Indian Himalayas, known for its mesmerizing snow trails, dense pine forests, and 360° summit views of majestic peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak. Located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, this trek stands tall at an altitude of 12,500 ft, offering a perfect blend of adventure and serenity. What makes the Kedarkantha trek truly special is its accessibility—ideal for beginners and experienced trekkers alike. From the charming base village of Sankri, the route passes through postcard-perfect campsites such as Juda Ka Talab and Kedarkantha Base Camp, covered in a pristine layer of snow during winter. Whether you’re a first-time trekker or a mountain enthusiast, Kedarkantha Trek promises an unforgettable Himalayan experience filled with beauty, challenge, and peace.

Kedarkantha Trek Difficulty

The Kedarkantha Trek is graded as easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners with basic fitness. The trail includes gradual ascents and short steep sections, especially during the summit climb. Snow can make the terrain slippery, so proper trekking shoes and guidance from trek leaders are essential.

The average trekking distance is around 20 km, spread over 4–6 days, with an elevation gain manageable for most fitness levels. Trekkers with good stamina and preparation can comfortably complete the journey.

Best Time to Do Kedarkantha Trek

The best time for Kedarkantha Trek is from December to April, when the entire trail is blanketed in snow, transforming it into a magical white wonderland.

  • December to February: Ideal for those who love deep snow and crystal-clear skies.

  • March to April: Perfect for trekkers who prefer moderate snow and blooming forest trails.

While Kedarkantha remains accessible throughout the year, winter is when its true charm unfolds, earning it the title — “The Queen of Winter Treks.”

Kedarkantha Trek Highlights

  • Snow Paradise: Experience heavy snowfall and glittering snowfields throughout winter.

  • Summit Views: Panoramic vistas of Gangotri, Yamunotri, and Swargarohini ranges.

  • Stunning Campsites: Camp beside frozen lakes like Juda Ka Talab amidst pine and oak forests.

  • Easy Access: Well-marked trail suitable for first-time trekkers and families.

  • Altitude: 1,950 m / 6,400 ft
Drive Distance: 220 km | 10 hours approx

Your Kedarkantha Trek begins from Dehradun. We’ll pick you up at 6:00 AM and start the scenic drive to Sankri, located around 220 km away. The 10-hour journey offers breathtaking mountain views as the road winds through picturesque towns like Mussoorie, Mori, and Naitwar. You’ll drive alongside the shimmering Yamuna and Tons Rivers, surrounded by pine-covered valleys.

The last stretch of the journey passes through Govind National Park, home to rich flora and fauna. Upon arrival at Sankri, check into the hotel and take some time to freshen up. In the evening, explore this charming Himalayan village — a popular base camp for treks like Har Ki Dun and Phulara Ridge. Enjoy a beautiful sunset over the mountains before settling in for dinner and a restful night at the hotel.

  • Altitude: 2,800 m / 9,100 ft
Trek Distance: 4–5 km | 5 hours approx
    Accommodation: Tent stay at Juda-ka-Talab

After breakfast, we start our trek from Sankri towards Juda-ka-Talab, a stunning alpine lake nestled amidst cedar and oak forests. The trail is about 4–5 km long and takes roughly 5 hours. As you walk through the charming village of Saur and into the dense forests of pine and maple, the sounds of rustling leaves and chirping birds accompany you.

In winter, the path is blanketed in snow, creating a magical setting. You may even spot wildlife like Himalayan langurs or mountain hares along the way. Upon reaching Juda-ka-Talab, you’ll be awestruck by the peaceful lake surrounded by snow and trees. During peak winter, the lake freezes completely, offering picture-perfect reflections.

Spend the evening soaking in the serenity, clicking photos, and stargazing before dinner and overnight camping beside the lake.

The final climb is challenging but incredibly rewarding. From the top, you’ll witness 360° views of the Himalayas, including peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak, Bandarpoonch, and Ranglana.
