Day 1: Rishikesh to Sari Village – Journey to the Base of Deoriatal

Altitude: 2,000 m / 6,600 ft
Drive Distance: 190 km | 7–8 hours
Accommodation: Guest House in Sari

Your Chopta Chandrashila Trek begins early from Rishikesh at 6:00 AM with a scenic drive to Sari Village, the base for the Deoriatal trail. As you wind through the mountain roads, every turn opens to stunning views of the Himalayas.

En route, you’ll pass through Devprayag, the sacred confluence of the Alakananda and Bhagirathi Rivers, forming the holy Ganga. This drive through pine forests and mountain valleys offers plenty of moments to stop, stretch, and enjoy breakfast or lunch (at your own expense) while soaking in the tranquil beauty of the Garhwal region.

Upon reaching Sari Village, enjoy a warm cup of tea and a short trek briefing. The evening is free to relax, explore the serene village, or simply unwind amidst the terraced fields and meadows. You’ll spend the night in a cozy guesthouse surrounded by mountain charm.

Trek Distance: 3 km | 1–2 hours
Accommodation: Swiss Tents (Triple/Quad sharing)

After breakfast, begin your 3 km trek from Sari to Deoriatal, a beautiful alpine lake nestled amidst lush forests. The trail is short and moderately easy, ideal for beginners.

The path starts as a rocky ascent that gradually climbs through forests of maple and rhododendron. About halfway, you’ll find a perfect viewpoint to admire the surrounding valleys. During spring, the forest bursts into vibrant red hues of blooming rhododendrons, while in winter, snow adds a magical touch.

After about two hours, you’ll reach Deoriatal, a crystal-clear lake reflecting the mighty Chaukhamba Peak and other snow-capped summits. The peaceful setting, surrounded by dense forest, makes it a photographer’s delight.

Enjoy a hearty lunch at the campsite and spend the afternoon exploring or birdwatching. The lake area is also part of a Green Trail initiative, so carry your eco bags and help keep the surroundings clean.

Spend the night camping beside the lake, under a sky full of stars.

Today’s trek from Deoriatal to Tala Village offers changing landscapes and incredible mountain views. The trail passes through the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its rich biodiversity. If lucky, you may spot Himalayan species like Monal pheasants, Red foxes, or Griffon vultures.

The route takes you through ancient rhododendron forests, small shrines adorned with prayer flags, and open meadows with glimpses of Kedarnath Main and Chaukhamba peaks. The trek is moderately challenging with gradual ascents and descents through forests and clearings.

After about 6–7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Tala Village, where a short 15 km drive brings you to Baniyakund. From here, the Chandrashila Peak stands tall on the horizon, inspiring you for the next day’s summit adventure.

Relax in your cottage or Swiss camp and enjoy a warm meal amid crisp mountain air.

This is the summit day — the most awaited part of your trek! Start early before sunrise to witness the most mesmerizing Himalayan views. After a short drive to Chopta, begin your ascent toward Tungnath Temple, one of the highest Shiva temples in the world.

The paved trail from Chopta to Tungnath is around 4–5 km long with gradual inclines through alpine meadows and rhododendron forests. Along the way, you might spot Himalayan birds like the Monal or Himalayan Griffon.

At Tungnath, take time to absorb the peaceful aura of this sacred temple, believed to have been built by the Pandavas in search of Lord Shiva. Its ancient architecture and high-altitude setting make it a deeply spiritual experience.

From Tungnath, a steeper 1.5 km trail climbs to Chandrashila Peak. In winter, crampons and gaiters are provided for safety. The final 30–45 minutes are a rewarding challenge, leading you to breathtaking 360° views of peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedar Dome, Kamet, and Gangotri ranges.

The sunrise from Chandrashila is simply magical — the first rays of the sun paint the snow-capped peaks in golden hues, creating an unforgettable Himalayan panorama. After spending time at the summit, retrace your steps to Chopta and drive back to your campsite at Baniyakund for a warm meal and restful night.

Drive Distance: 210 km | 7–8 hours

Wake up to your last Himalayan sunrise and enjoy morning tea amidst serene surroundings. After breakfast, drive back from Baniyakund to Rishikesh, retracing the scenic mountain route.

The journey offers one last chance to admire the lush valleys, winding roads, and snow-capped peaks of Garhwal Himalayas. Stops will be made for breakfast and lunch (at your own expense).

You’ll reach Rishikesh by evening and be dropped off near Nainital Bank, Tapovan, marking the end of your Chopta Chandrashila Trek.

How to Reach

Pick-Up Information

It is essential for everyone to arrive at Rishikesh by 6:00 am.
Pick-up Location: Back Stayz Laxman Jhula, Near SBI Bank Tapovan.

Once you reach Rishikesh, The Mountain Vibes will take care of your onward travel arrangements if you’ve opted for our pick-up service. You can easily select this option during the booking process by adding it as an add-on.

Options to Reach Rishikesh

You can reach Rishikesh from Delhi, Dehradun Airport, or Chandigarh. The options below will help you plan your journey smoothly:

  1. By Train/Bus to Rishikesh:
    Take an overnight train or bus directly to Rishikesh.

  2. Via Haridwar:
    Take an overnight train or bus to Haridwar, then drive to Rishikesh (25 km | approx. 35 minutes with normal traffic).

  3. Via Dehradun:
    Take an overnight train or bus to Dehradun, then drive to Rishikesh (50 km | approx. 1 hour 20 minutes with normal traffic).

    (We recommend government buses over private ones outside bus stations, as they are more reliable and punctual. Ensure that you reach Rishikesh by 5:30 am.)

By Air (Recommended):
Board a flight to Dehradun Airport (Jolly Grant Airport) (21 km | approx. 30 minutes from Rishikesh).
If arriving by air, it’s advisable to come one day in advance to avoid last-minute delays.

Drop-Off Information

The designated drop-off point is Tapovan, Rishikesh.
You will reach Rishikesh between 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
Please plan your onward travel only after 10:00 pm.

Note: During July and August, it’s highly advisable to keep a buffer day in your itinerary due to the monsoon season. If not used, you can spend the extra day exploring Rishikesh, a spiritual and adventure hub.

If you prefer to travel directly to the base camp and not use The Mountain Vibes’ pick-up service, you can take a government bus or hire a private cab from Rishikesh.
Your trek coordinator will assist you with all necessary information for bus or cab bookings.

The Mountain Vibes provides comfortable transportation via Tempo Traveler, Bolero, or similar vehicles.
If you’d like to upgrade your transport, please contact your trek coordinator for details and assistance.

Health and Awareness
  1. Pulse rate at rest must be in between (60 to 90 beats per minute).

  2. Blood Pressure Reading must be in between (DIASTOLIC 70 – 90, SYSTOLIC 100 – 140 mm Hg).

  3. Respiratory rate at rest must be in between (12 to 20 breaths per minute).

  4. Should not have Liver and kidney issues.

  5. Should not have Diabetes Mellitus, Bronchial Asthma, Heart problems, Hypertension, etc.

  6. No pacemaker implant.

  7. People with Sinus issues, Epilepsy please contact to trek coordinator before booking the trek.

  8. If your BMI is not normal, Please contact our Trek coordinator before Trek booking.

Government Employess
  1. Government Employees can avail the benefit of Special Casual Leave (SCL) when they join us for a trekking expedition. As per the rules of the Pay Commission, Special Casual Leave can be availed for up to 30 days in a calendar year for trekking/mountaineering expeditions through a registered organization. Trek The Himalayas is a registered adventure tour operator by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) and the Ministry Of Tourism (MOT).
  2. Trekkers have to apply for leave at least 20 days before the trek departure date.
  3. This service is exclusive to Indian government employees and is applicable only for treks within India.
  4. Do mail at info@trekthehimalayas to apply and mention your booked trek date and trek name.

We get that a travel and adventure enthusiast like you will be as bumped about cancelling a trek as us but we also understand that you may have to cancel the trek for any unforeseen reason and therefore the Cancellation Service of The Mountain Vibes does not return the advance amount paid by the trekkers instead we provide a voucher for the exact amount which is equivalent to the amount paid by you.
